How many times have you heard phrases such as “He killed someone. He is going to burn for that!”, “She beats her children. There is a special place in hell for people like her.”, “Look at that woman selling herself for money. She has condemned her soul to everlasting torment.”, or “They will beat that charge. Money talks”….and so on? For me, it has been far too many times. The worst part is that I have been guilty of saying these things myself….and I know I am not the only one who is. It was like I was rating sin and passing judgment at the same time. Where did I obtain the authority to do this? I wasn’t given this authority….I created the authority for myself. With that said, the following verses hit me right between the eyes…
Matthew 7:1-5 “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”
As for rating of sins, I called this the “sin rating system.” You know the one. It is where we, as humans, believe that one sin is worse than another until it fits neatly into our little box of idealism. Going by the questions above, the little rating system would be from 1-10 (1 being the worst) Murder – 1. Child Abuse – 2. Prostitution – 3. Bribery – 4. Is this anywhere near scriptural? Let’s take a look at a few verses.
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
“Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.”
“Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.
While this was not a long and detailed list of sins and there consequences, it is clear to see that ALL sin is wrong. According to the word of God, blasphemy against the Spirit is held as the worst. Matthew 12:3 clearly states that it is the one sin that will not be forgiven. That kinda blows the whole “sin rating system” right out of the water. As for the rest of the sins, they are pretty much equal. There is not one that is held in a worse regard than another. It was the doctrine of man that introduced that logic. It was man’s idea that murder, fornication, drinking, prostitution, stealing and so on were going to land someone in the fiery pits quicker than the blink of an eye. The truth is, that if any of us commit any of these sins, and do not repent and turn from these evil ways, OUR actions will lead us into the fiery pits. It will not be because we committed a sin that was worse than another!
