You have watched or heard this story before. There have been countless movies made with this scene. There have been numerous pictures created. I even participated in Christmas plays as a child depicting the scenario. You know the one. Baby Jesus in laying in the manger and the three wise men show up with their gifts. I would have never thought that such a beautifully depicted scene could have been false. Well, it looks like I was wrong!
Matt 2;9 we are told, “When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. Matt 2:11 goes on to say “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh
First, as stated in the first verse above, the three wise men had to travel toward the star in the east. There were not cars, airplanes, or cruise ships in those days. They would have had to travel by animal. Naturally, that would have taken quite a while. Also, the verse states the phrase “young child” not baby. Second, in the second verse above, they came into the house…not stable. Again the phrase “young child” was used. Upon reading these scriptures, the only conclusion to be drawn is that the story of the three wise men coming to visit the baby Jesus in the manger in the stable is the doctrine of men.
