To Tell the Truth

Throughout my life, I have heard the phrase “Its just a little white lie” more times than I can count. I have also been told, when referring to lying, this little phrase ….”In this life, its dog eat dog.” My personal favorite (sarcasm) has to be “Who’s gonna know?” I have watched as several adults have put their own children up to telling lies. I have watched as lies have destroyed marriages, jobs, relationships, friendships, and even one’s own freedom.

Have I ever told a lie? Yes I have. Am I ashamed of it? Yes I am. Is this the behavior that I want my own children to follow? Absolutely not! Just yesterday, my own daughter was caught telling a lie that could have had dire consequences for another person. Although I was angry with her, I did not lose my temper. In fact, I turned to a better source than myself to teach her the error of her ways…..the bible. I made her read the following scriptures. Perhaps these scriptures may help you or someone that you know.

Exodus 20:16 – “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor”

Psalms 58:3 – “The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies

Psalms 101:7 – “He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight”

Proverbs 6:16, 17, 19 – “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea seven are an abomination unto him” “A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood” “A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren”

Proverbs 12:19 – “The lip of truth shall be established for ever; but a lying tongue is but for a moment”

Proverbs 12:22 – “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight”

Proverbs 19:9 – “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish”

John 8:44 – “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it”

Revelation 21:8 – “But the fearful, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, whoremongers, sorcerers, idolators, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death”

As you can see, there is no such thing as a “little white lie”. Lying is lying period! As for “Who’s gonna know?”, it is very clear that our Lord and will know! From the words of the scriptures, he doesn’t think its cute, funny, or innocent. There are very dire consequences for lying. Do you want to suffer the consequences mentioned in the above scriptures? We should all consider these scriptures the next time that we are tempted to lie.

GOD BLESS!
